No official news source that I know has it yet, but boxing journalist
Dan Rafael states Philadelphia's former cruiserweight champion Steve
Cunningham with several fights now at heavyweight, will face young,
undefeated, and highly-ranked Ukrainian Czar Glazgov. Rafael goes on
to say that it will be a eliminator match, with the winner declared
mandatory challenger for one of Wladimir Klitschko's titles.
History has shown that Klitschko likes to hold on to all of his
titles, so while nothing is certain, including that Klitschko doesn't
lose before Cunningham or Glazlov gets to him for whichever belt it
is, this is a great opportunity for them.
It's supposed to be the undercard for Kovalev-Pascal in March, so a
lot of waiting yet.
With an overhand right, Cunningham floored UK giant Tyson Fury about
18 months ago, before Fury mounted a fierce comeback in that match, to
win by way of a left-forearm-blinding maneuver followed by clubbing
right, an act which seemed to belong more to the bare-knuckle brawlers
of Fury's gypsy heritage than the sport of boxing.
So, if anyone besides me is tracking these eventualities: Fury is
currently mandatory for Klitschko's WBO belt. But Klitschko, who just
clobbered Kubrat Pulev, has some other fight to win before he must
face Fury. If Cunningham manages to defeat Glazgov, he is mandatory
for one of Klitschko's other belts, but Fury gets Klitschko first.
In closing, the most likely outcome is that Wladimir Klitschko keeps
beating the heck out of everybody put in front of him. However the one
I'd like to see is Fury defeats Klitschko and then must rematch
Cunningham at the end of 2015 for the heavyweight championship of the
world.
