Chavez, Jr. v. Fonfara

It gives me so much pleasure to see Chavez beaten. His endless
complaining to the referee about this, that and the other always
underscores his inherent belief that if he shows up they oughta award
him the win. Can't make weight? No problem; just move to a heavier
weight division. Problem solved!

With scant defensive skills; he just bullrushed with his head down for
all nine rounds. And worked the body--that oughta be enough because
he's so strong! He managed to tie a single round only by virtue of the
ref taking a point from Fonfara for "butting with the shoulder". That
was a novelty.

In the corner he said there was something wrong with his leg.
Apparently the problem was when Fonfara pasted him with a significant
left hook at the end of the 9th round, his leg didn't respond to
instructions to "move", so Chavez fell over. But it wasn't Chavez's
fault--it was his leg's fault!

Or the referee's, or maybe it was Sergio Martinez's fault.

No matter: He wants a rematch in case somebody didn't see him lose
every single round. And he deserves a rematch for Pete's sake--he's
the famous Julio Cesar Chave, Jr! In another 10 or 12 or 14 months
he'll be ready to fight again, if he can find a good referee!

Well, there goes Froch's Las Vegas farewell bout.
Now that a Chavez Jr fight is no longer viable,
wonder if we might see a rematch between Froch and
Ward in Sin City?
This fight should be used as a blueprint how to fight
a fighter (Chavez) that is good, but in no way
spectacular and not particularly well-schooled: just
be composed.

Chavez couldn't match Fonfara anywhere apart from the
department of hooks to the body. On his way in, Chavez
had to eat straight punches on the outside, and then
short hooks to the chin at medium-distance.
I'm surprised Chavez took all that so well, and also
impressed Fonfara then took Chavez's long, low hooks
so well!

In the first round, I thought Chavez would last just
a couple of rounds at best. I knew he was going to
loose, but lasting so long was indeed something
I didn't expect. In loosing twice - this, and the bout
knocking down Martinez in the 12th - Chavez has showed
everyone that he is indeed a good fighter. If he would
go to an ordinary boxing gym he would be Mr. Popular.
Just not at this level.

He should retire and do something else and do boxing
only for fun and health like everyone else. There are
worse fates that that!
