My boy (he's from the town I live in) Shawn Porter bounced back after
he lost his title by KOing Eric Bone in the 5th round. Apparently
Roberto Garcia, Porter's original opponent, didn't think enough of
this fight to make weight and so he was replaced.

The Berto vs Lopez bout was very entertaining. Berto who is also
trying to get back into the championship contender picture, finally
TKOd Lozez in the 6th. Some thought the stoppage by referee Raul Caiz
Jr. was too early. I'm not one of those. Berto floored Lopez for the
second time in Round 6, and Caiz Jr. instantly waved off the fight at
1:30 without giving Lopez a chance to reach his feet.

I hesitate to say this since Shawn's your homey, but I don't like
watching him fight. He's as strong as an ox but just rushes in and
thrashes. He's powerful, but damn I wish they'd spend some time in the
gym refining his skills and prepping him for a longer career in boxing.
Everybody seemingly loves a slugger, but I wish he'd consider style
options that made the difference between him and Kell Brook. There's a
lot more years as champ in Porter if he could get a trainer to bring it
out.

I've seen a number of close calls, including last nights victory of
Kovelev over Pascal, that would once have been clearly considered too
early. These days I'm pleased that we don't have the "let him proove
to everybody in the back row that he's broken" approach. It was clear
that both Pascal and Lopez were *not* going to win, and been
significantly hurt. The only thing needed was a couple more punches
reducing their life's range of cognitive ability down by 5 years or so.

Over the past 2 years or so, I think refs everywhere are doing a better
job than ever with today's very hard-hitting fighters, and the razor's
edge between competition and crime.

No worries. Shawn's fought that way his entire career going back to
his amateur days. His trainer most likely things it is better to try
and refine what he does do rather than trying to change him. Perhaps
as he ages he'll dial it down some.

It appears in every major sport the powers that be have become
increasingly aware of the damage both short term and long term that
concussions can cause. I'm happy to see something is being done to
lessen that damage.
