On Saturday night Miguel Cotto fought his 3rd fight after back to back
losing decisions in 2012 or Mayweather Jr. and Trout. This fight was
to defend his WBC Middleweight championship. It wasn't much of a
battle as he took Daniel Geale out in the 4th round and got a TKO win.

Cotto has been trying to get a big money fight so he win and ride off
into the sunset to retire and be able to take care of his family. He's
nearing his expiration date at 34 yet the big names in the
middleweight world seem reluctant to give him a bout. Perhaps they're
afraid he won't attract enough fans or money or attention. Perhaps
they're reluctant to fight one tough S.O.B.

Specifically, Cotto would like to take on Ring Magazine's #1 contender
Gennady Golovkin for a big pay-per view fight. In order to snag that
bout, he'll need to meet and beat Canelo Alvarez whom he was supposed
to fight last May 2nd but that deal fell through.

I think the higher priority is Canelo with the career-finishing
Golovkin as a distant 2nd. Additionally I Cotto needs plenty of time
to pimp up either fights to a more-millions level of interest.
Certainly Canelo will be a high-dollar fight because Mexican and
Mexican-American fans can be *counted on* to pay significant PPV fees.

Everybody loves Golovkin, and he gets a high share of top level
celebrities (other than hip-hop) at his fights. But he has yet to earn
a dollar in PPV, and though he has fans I'm not sure what kind of
loyalists he has. It'd debatable exactly how many millions he can pull
in for a big fight.

Canelo is the ticket for a number of similar-weight fighters.

By the way, I was very impressed with Cotto's showing last night
against Geale. In preparation for a Golovkin fight it does his ego
good to get Geale out of the way earlier in the fight that GGG did.

Though nobody's talking about it--I'm *still* hoping that Sergio
Martinez can get his body back in shape for another few great fights,
particularly against Cotto.

Last interview I saw with Cotto he reportedly stated that he was not going to *be dictated to by anyone or any organization*- when he was questioned about a unification match with 3-G. As for any possibility of any of us seeing Sergio Martinez in the ring again, the last I heard, he has all but officially retired due to the chronic knee(s).That's unfortunate as he was for many, an interesting and enjoyable fighter to watch prior to the health issues.

Cotto would be well-advised to "not be dicatated to" for as long as
possible. The more fans he gains this year through fighting ABG
("anyone but Golovkin"), added to the additional fans GGG gains by
fighting anyone at all will ensure that they get bigger PPV receipts
when they do face off, and he retires that much more wealthy. Barring
a poor prepatory opponent for Cotto during 2015 I assume he'll try to
push for the middle of 2016.

Martinez announced his retirement in mid-June. Only a few months back I
had heard he was considering operations and re-hab and coming back for
one more hurrah. I'm sure it's best for him and his fans (including
me).
