What a great night last night watching Shawn Porter! A great
opportunity to see what Adrien Boner does best as well: lurch and
grope, holding and elbowing for 12 rounds. And he even got a point
taken away for some of it--that was a shock! Admittedly It would have
felt better if he had had points taken away on three or four occasions,
but it's a start.
I'm not sure how Shawn lost 5 rounds on one judge's card but it looks
like he only lost 1 or 2 on the remaining judge's cards. Shawn got
knocked-down at the beginning of the 12th, but got up and in seconds
had Boner holding and elbowing again. Sure, don't like Boner, but I
scored that round 9-9 because Shawn *still* provided every element of
activity but the knockdown.
Actually Boner is has a lot of potential as a boxer; he's been a hard
puncher at lower weights, and has very fast hands. But he has
concentrated solely on emulating the worst aspects of Mayweather's
approach; holding and running. Other than that--last night he did
nothing! At least Mayweather manages to actually outpoint his
opponents this way through at least 7 round of 12. Not Boner.
Boner attempted to do what Mayweather is most famous for--not losing.
But you have to do more than elbow and hold to actually win those 7
rounds.
Next, I'd like Boner to lose to Kell Brook before returning permanently
to the lightweight ranks. It would be nice to see him face Paulie
Malignaggi and get beaten. That would be sweet.
